Beethoven’s canon “Esel aller Esel, hi ha” translates as “Ass of all asses, hee haw!,” with the same connotation of an ass as a fool as in English. This canon was catalogued as Hess 277 and more recently in a revised edition of the Kinsky-Halm catalog as WoO 227.
Beethoven-Haus rather confusing indicates that the canon dates from September or November 1826. The world would love to know the intended recipient of this particular piece of Beethovenian musical scorn, but that information does not seem to be available.
