Like the WoO 70 variations, Beethoven’s WoO 69 variations are based on a tune from Giovanni Paisello’s opera La Molinara (the miller woman). Paisello is mostly remembered today as the composer of the first opera of The Barber of Seville a decade before Rossini was even born.
